4-Day Inca Trail Itinerary · How Hard Is the 4-Day Inca Trail?
The 4-day Inca Trail 2027 season is already on the minds of thousands of travelers, and for good reason. This legendary route is the most famous trek in Peru and the only way to walk into Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, following stone paths built by the Inca more than 500 years ago. But with a strict daily limit on permits, planning ahead is everything.
In this guide, our local team in Cusco explains everything you need to know: how permits work, when to book, what each day looks like, and how to prepare.
Why the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail Is Worth It
The Classic Inca Trail covers about 42 km through cloud forest, high Andean passes and Inca sites you can only reach on foot. Along the way you’ll visit ruins like Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna, before arriving at Machu Picchu on the final day.
Unlike any other trek, the Inca Trail is part of the protected Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every step is on an original Inca path.
Inca Trail Permits 2027: Book Early
This is the most important part of planning your trip.
- Daily limit: only 500 permits are issued per day, and that number includes guides, porters and cooks. That leaves around 200 spaces for travelers.
- Only through licensed operators: you can’t buy an Inca Trail permit on your own. Permits are sold only through tour operators authorized by Peru’s Ministry of Culture.
- They sell out fast: for the high season (April to October), permits can sell out up to 6 months in advance.
- Non-transferable: permits are issued with your passport details and cannot be changed, transferred or refunded. Double-check your name and passport number when booking.
Our advice: if you want to hike the 4-day Inca Trail in 2027, send us your preferred dates now. We’ll confirm availability and secure your permit as soon as it can be booked.
4-Day Inca Trail Itinerary
Day 1: Km 82 to Wayllabamba
Your adventure begins at Km 82, near Ollantaytambo. After the permit check, you’ll cross the Urubamba River and follow a gentle trail past the Inca site of Llactapata. This is the easiest day and a good warm-up. Overnight at camp near Wayllabamba.
Day 2: Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215 m)
The most challenging day. You’ll climb steadily to Warmiwañusca, known as Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point of the trek at 4,215 m. Then it’s a steep descent to the Pacaymayo valley for the night. Take it slow: your guide and porters set a pace that works for the group.
Day 3: The Most Beautiful Day
Often called the best day of the trek. You’ll pass Runkurakay, Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca, walking through cloud forest with views of snow-capped peaks. In the afternoon you reach Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive Inca sites on the trail. Final camp nearby.
Day 4: Sun Gate and Machu Picchu
An early start to reach Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, where you’ll see Machu Picchu for the first time. After walking down to the citadel, you’ll enjoy a guided tour before taking the bus to Aguas Calientes and the train back to Cusco.
How Hard Is the 4-Day Inca Trail?
The Classic Inca Trail is rated moderate to challenging. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking 6 to 8 hours a day on steep stone steps. The biggest challenge is altitude, especially on Day 2. Before your trip, read the CDC’s health advice for travelers to Peru.
Tip: spend at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before your trek to acclimatize. Ollantaytambo, at a lower altitude than Cusco, is a great place to rest before the trail. You can even warm up with our Sun Gate tour by horse to Inti Punku of Cachiccata.
Best Time to Hike the Inca Trail in 2027
- Dry season (April to October): clear skies and stable weather. This is the most popular time, so permits sell out first.
- Rainy season (November to March): greener landscapes and fewer people, but expect rain and muddy trails.
- February: the Inca Trail closes every year for maintenance.
What to Pack
- Broken-in hiking boots
- Rain jacket and warm layers (nights are cold)
- Sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
- Insect repellent
- Reusable water bottle
- Your original passport. It’s checked at the start of the trail and at Machu Picchu. Check the U.S. travel requirements for Peru before you fly.
- Cash for snacks and tips
Short on Time or Permits?
If the 4-day Inca Trail is sold out for your dates, you still have great options:
- Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (2 Days): hike the last 12 km of the Inca Trail through Wiñay Wayna and the Sun Gate.
- 5-Day Inca Trail: a slower pace with more time to enjoy each site.
