Rainbow Mountain is one of Cusco’s most extraordinary natural wonders — a mountain streaked with mineral bands that set it apart from anything else in the Andes. It’s located in the Cusco department, Canchis province, Cusipata district, in the area of Quispicanchis.
The experience goes beyond the seven-colored slopes: nearby lies the Red Valley, colored by copper deposits that intensify its striking tones. Sitting at roughly 5,000 meters above sea level, this seven-colored mountain is one of the highest tourist attractions in the world, with sweeping views toward the sacred Ausangate and Ocongate peaks.
Most visitors see Rainbow Mountain on a rushed single-day trip from Cusco. The two-day version lets you experience it properly:
Day 1: The trek begins in the Alkatary community with a demanding 7-hour hike, walking alongside striking Andean scenery on the approach to Rainbow Mountain. We set up camp nearby, ready for an early start the next morning.
Day 2: Wake up to watch the sunrise light up the seven-colored slopes before making your way back — one of the most rewarding views in the Cusco region.
