Salkantay Trek Camping

The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is one of the sacred paths leading to the mountains surrounding the city of Machu Picchu. In the times of the Incas, these mountains, such as Salkantay, were highly revered by Inca priests because they considered these places to be like temples of the gods. The Salkantay Mountain is one of the largest mountains in the Cusco region and stands behind the city of Machu Picchu. Both Salkantay and Machu Picchu mountains were always venerated by Inca priests who performed human sacrifices, as well as sacrifices of animals like llamas, alpacas, and even the famous Andean rabbit. The Salkantay Trail hike is a combination of many things, such as visiting Humantay Lagoon and also visiting local homes in Lucmabamba, already in the Amazon jungle, where you can taste freshly harvested coffee and also see the process of how it’s prepared. During its preparation, you’ll be the one conducting the procedure to learn how to obtain the coffee plant seeds and prepare it to your taste. This is all before you reach the city of Machu Picchu.

Why Salkantay Trek To Machupicchu

There are several reasons to choose the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Firstly, along the trail, there are no checkpoints, and there are no stone steps, which makes the hike more challenging, but the Salkantay route offers a smoother journey. The views are unparalleled and unique, combining high Andean landscapes with the Amazon jungle. Additionally, this route also leads to the Inca cities of Choquequirao and Vilcabamba, where the last refuge of the Incas is now located.
