Machu Picchu By Vistadome Train

Holiday  By Train  To Machu Picchu One Day

Machu Picchu is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and this full-day train tour is the most comfortable way to see it — no trekking required. This exquisitely preserved sanctuary was built by the Inca Empire, and many historians believe it served as a place of rest and worship for Inca nobility, hidden high in the cloud forest above the Urubamba River. Traveling aboard the panoramic Vistadome train, you’ll ride through the Sacred Valley with sweeping mountain views before arriving at the base of Machu Picchu itself. Once inside the citadel, your expert guide will walk you through more than 150 stone structures — houses, temples, and Inca fountains — built into the mountainside among terraced fields and sweeping valley views. It’s a chance to step back centuries and imagine what daily life looked like at the height of the Inca Empire, without the physical demands of a multi-day trek. This tour is ideal for travelers short on time, families, or anyone who wants the full Machu Picchu experience without hiking the Inca Trail. If you do have more time and want a deeper adventure, consider our Short Inca Trail (2 Days) for a hiking experience that ends at the iconic Sun Gate.

Price

This full-day tour costs $420 USD per person, including round-trip Vistadome train tickets, entrance to Machu Picchu, and a professional guide.

Briefing for the Machu Picchu by Train Tour

Our briefing takes place one day before your trip at your hotel in Cusco. Your guide will walk you through the full itinerary — train schedules, what to expect at the Machu Picchu citadel, and how to prepare — and answer any questions you have about the Inca site, the train journey, or logistics for the day. For guidance on what to pack, check our Inca Trail packing list — most of it applies to a day trip too, especially sun protection and layers for changing weather. Curious about the history behind the site itself? UNESCO’s official listing on Machu Picchu as a World Heritage Site is a great resource if you want to dive deeper before your visit.

Itinerary

Machupicchu Holiday By Vistadome Train

We will pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 AM and make our way to Aguas Calientes town, at 2,040 meters above sea level (masl), at the foot of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary (2,430 masl). A bus will take us up the winding mountainside road to the entrance, where we will explore Machu Picchu together on a 2.5-hour guided tour, starting around 10:00 AM. Afterward, you will have free time to explore the sprawling archaeological site on your own and, if you’d like, head up to one of the lookout points for stunning views over the Sanctuary from Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu Mountain (entrance tickets to these mountains must be purchased separately and in advance, as they sell out quickly). In the afternoon, we descend by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo, then transferring by private van to Cusco, arriving around 6:30 PM.

What Makes the Vistadome Train Special?

The Vistadome train to Machu Picchu is known for its panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows, offering some of the best views of any train route in Peru. As you travel, you’ll watch the landscape transform — from the high Andean mountains around Ollantaytambo to the beginning of the cloud forest near Machu Picchu, where the Andes start blending into the edge of the Amazon jungle. Along the way, you’ll also spot several Inca archaeological sites visible directly from the train track. For travelers to Machu Picchu, there are generally two train options: the Vistadome and the more exclusive Hiram Bingham luxury train. We offer the Vistadome experience — the ideal balance of comfort, scenic views, and value, letting you enjoy the full journey without an oversized price tag.
