Moonstone Trek To Machu Picchu 5D/4N

Moonstone Trek to Machu Picchu — 5 Days

  • From $750 USD per person
An off-the-beaten-path alternative to the classic Inca Trail — no permit required, smaller groups, and a route that most travelers never see. The Moonstone Trek combines ancient Inca quarries, remote Andean villages, high mountain passes, and the sacred temple of Wakaywillka before arriving at Machu Picchu. Inca Trail Classic will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:00 a.m. to start your adventure on the Moonstone Trek to Machu Picchu. We drive through the province of Anta and stop at Quillarumiyoc, the ancient Temple of the Moon, an important Inca site dedicated to lunar worship. Then we continue to Huarocondo and drive through a scenic valley to reach the starting point of the trek. The trail ascends gently until we reach Huata, a pre-Inca fortress at 3,855 m (12,645 ft) with amazing views of the Andes. After visiting the site, we enjoy lunch surrounded by high Andean landscapes, then continue to our first campsite in the small village of Chillipahua (3,750 m / 12,300 ft). This first day offers a perfect mix of history, nature, and local culture with Inca Trail Classic Peru.

Pre-Trek briefing.

One day before starting the Moonstone Trek, we’ll provide you with a detailed briefing about your upcoming 5-day adventure — logistics, gear checklist, and time to ask any last questions.

From Huarocondo we reach the trailhead and begin trekking toward Huata, a pre-Inca fortress at 3,855 m with sweeping Andes views. After a leaving a coca-leaf offering (kh’inthu) to the mountains, we continue past high-altitude native flora and local farmland to our first campsite in Chillipahua (3,750 m). Day 2: Chillipahua – Chancachuco Pampa (10 km / 7 hours walking) A gradual zigzag climb through farmland and forested slopes to Pukaccasa Pampa (4,535 m) — the highest point of the trek — where we stop for lunch. We descend to our campsite in Chancachuco Pampa (3,900 m), surrounded by snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and grazing llamas and horses. Meals: breakfast, lunch, tea time, dinner + snacks.

Day 3: Chancachuco Pampa – Choquetacarpa Pampa 11 km / 8 hours walking) We follow a river into the dramatic Cchuro Canyon (3,700 m), then climb to the Temple of Wakaywillka («Sacred Tears» in Quechua), dedicated to Mount Veronica, at 3,900 m. After lunch near the temple with views of the icy peaks, we descend to our final campsite at Choquetacarpa Pampa (3,750 m), with views of ancient ruins and the Sacred Valley. Meals: breakfast, lunch, tea time, dinner + snacks.

Day 4: Choquetacarpa Pampa – Cachiccata Quarries – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes (8 km / 4-5 hours walking) We descend through the Cachiccata Quarries, where pink granite was cut and transported to build the Sun Temple in Ollantaytambo — you’ll learn how the Incas moved these massive stones across the valley. In Ollantaytambo (2,800 m) there’s time to explore the market and Inca-era streets before boarding the train to Aguas Calientes (2,040 m), where we spend the night. Meals: breakfast, box lunch, dinner.
