The Ministry of Culture of Peru has officially released the long-awaited resolution: the Inca Trail will reopen on April 1st, 2025. Both the classic 4-day Inca Trail and the 2-day Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu—via the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku)—will once again welcome trekkers from around the world.
After a temporary closure due to weather conditions and maintenance work, this reopening brings joy to thousands of travelers who already hold permits for the upcoming season. Once again, hikers will journey along ancient Inca pathways, camp under starry Andean skies, pass through stunning archaeological sites, and feel the thrill of arriving at the Lost City of the Incas on foot.

What is the 2-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu like? 🥾🌿
The Short Inca Trail (2 days) is a perfect option for those who want to experience the magic of the Inca Trail in less time—without missing the heart of the journey. And yes, it includes entry through the famous Sun Gate (Inti Punku), just like the ancient Incas did centuries ago.
🗺️ Where does the trek begin?
The hike begins at Kilometer 106 (KM 106) of the railway line to Machu Picchu, right by the Urubamba River. From there, the trail leads uphill toward one of the most beautiful archaeological sites on the route: Wiñayhuayna—an ancient complex full of agricultural terraces and Inca history.
⏱️ This first part of the hike takes about 3 hours, following a scenic path through the lush cloud forest, surrounded by greenery, mountain views, and occasional glimpses of the valley below.
🌄 What happens after Wiñayhuayna?
From Wiñayhuayna, hikers continue on an original Inca stone path that leads directly to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku)—the traditional entrance to Machu Picchu used by the Incas.
Once you arrive, you’ll get your first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu, a moment that many travelers call unforgettable. After soaking in the view, the trail descends gently for about 2 more hours until you reach the actual ruins of Machu Picchu.
🛏️ At the end of the day, you’ll head to Aguas Calientes town to spend the night at a hotel. The next morning, you’ll return to Machu Picchu for a guided tour of the citadel, giving you plenty of time to explore and learn more about this wonder of the world.
