Day 1: Sacred Valley — Chinchero, Maras Salt Mines, Moray & Ollantaytambo
Pickup from your Cusco hotel is at
7:00 AM in our tourist bus. Your Sacred Valley day traces a route through some of the most striking Inca and pre-Inca sites in the region, ending right at the doorstep of tomorrow’s trek.
Chinchero — Perched at over 3,700 m, this traditional Andean village is known for its weaving cooperatives, where local women still spin and dye wool using centuries-old techniques, and for its colonial church built directly atop Inca stone foundations. Sweeping views of the surrounding mountains make this an easy, high-altitude introduction to the valley.
Maras Salt Mines (Salineras) — Thousands of shallow terraced pools cascade down a hillside, fed by a natural underground spring and harvested for salt using methods dating back to pre-Inca times. The white and ochre terraces spilling down the mountainside make this one of the most photographed stops in the Sacred Valley.
Moray — A short distance away, concentric circular terraces descend like an amphitheater into the earth. Believed to have functioned as an Inca agricultural laboratory, each terrace level creates its own microclimate — a striking demonstration of Inca engineering and experimentation with crop cultivation at altitude.
Ollantaytambo — The day’s final stop, and the only Inca town in Peru still inhabited and laid out largely as it was centuries ago. Massive stone terraces climb toward an unfinished temple complex at the top, built from stone quarried from a mountain across the valley. Wandering its original cobbled streets and water channels offers a preview of the Inca stonework you’ll encounter on the trail the next day. You’ll overnight at a hotel here, ready for tomorrow’s one-day Inca Trail hike.

Day 2: The 1-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Pickup is early, at
5:15 AM, for the train to kilometer 104 — timed to make sure we don’t miss our Inca Trail departure. From there, our trek along the Inca Trail covers 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) to the awe-inspiring ruins of Machu Picchu. Along the way, we’ll pass remarkable Inca archaeological sites and pass through the diverse flora and fauna of the Machu Picchu Valley — a landscape that marks the transition into the edge of the Peruvian Amazon, adding an extra layer of enchantment to the trek. The hike builds toward
Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, the same viewpoint where Inca travelers once caught their first glimpse of the citadel below. On arrival, we’ll visit Circuit 1 for the classic postcard photos of the citadel, then continue to Circuit 3 for a fuller guided tour with your professional local guide, before descending by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch. From there, we’ll catch the train back to Ollantaytambo and on to Cusco — arriving the same day.
