Machu picchu – Ausangate Trek to rainbow mountain
Already visited Machu Picchu and have some extra time in Cusco?
We invite you to experience an unforgettable 3-day adventure: the Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain. This breathtaking journey takes you through landscapes that feel like the Himalayas, Nepal, or even Kilimanjaro — but with the unique serenity and magic of the Peruvian Andes.
Snow-capped peaks, hidden valleys, and naturally colored mountains surround you along the way. The silence of nature creates a deep sense of peace, making this trek not just a physical journey, but a spiritual one too.
On the first day, you’ll explore the stunning Seven Lakes of Ausangate, a collection of turquoise and emerald lagoons nestled between towering mountains. After a rewarding hike, soak in the soothing hot springs of Upis, located at 3,800 meters above sea level — the perfect way to relax under the open Andean sky.
This route is a dream for trekking lovers and adventure seekers. Along the way, you’ll pass through remote Andean communities, where traditional lifestyles and ancient customs are still alive. The grand finale? Reaching the famous Rainbow Mountain, hiking past vividly colored peaks and surreal landscapes that seem almost painted by nature itself.
A journey through raw beauty, vibrant culture, and unforgettable adventure. This is more than a trek — it’s an experience for the soul.

Cusco city.
Cusco is the heart of Inca culture, a city full of history, charm, and energy. But keep in mind — it’s located at an altitude of 3,300 meters (10,800 ft), which means that sometimes, depending on where you’re coming from, you might feel a bit of altitude sickness.
Don’t worry, though — if you’re an experienced traveler or have done trekking before, your body might already be well adapted to the altitude. In many cases, your past travel adventures will help you adjust more easily.
But if you’d rather take it easy and acclimate slowly, we recommend heading straight to the town of Ollantaytambo. Located at a lower altitude than Cusco, it’s a great place to start your journey and let your body adjust more gently.
Ollantaytambo sits in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas — surrounded by mountains, Inca ruins, and local charm. It’s not only more comfortable in terms of elevation, but also incredibly beautiful and culturally rich.
Ollantaytambo Town
The town of Ollantaytambo sits at an altitude of 2,700 meters (8,860 ft), nestled in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It lies lower than the city of Cusco, making it an excellent option for travelers who want to acclimate to the altitude in a more comfortable and gradual way.
While staying in Ollantaytambo, you can enjoy short hikes, local tours, or even horseback riding through the surrounding mountains and valleys. It’s a peaceful place, rich in history and natural beauty — perfect for easing into your Andean adventure.
Ollantaytambo is not only known for its well-preserved Inca ruins and charming cobblestone streets; it’s also considered the gateway to Machu Picchu and the entrance to the edge of the Amazon jungle. From here, many travelers begin their journey by train or on foot toward the lost city.
The town also has strong roots in agriculture. White corn is one of the main crops produced in the area, along with traditional livestock such as llamas, alpacas, and sheep. Farming and herding have shaped the local culture for generations, and you’ll still see it alive in daily life.
Whether you’re passing through or staying a few days, Ollantaytambo is a special place where Andean tradition, nature, and adventure come together.
Aguas Calientes Town
The town of Machu Picchu — also known as Aguas Calientes — is located at an altitude of 2,100 meters (6,890 ft), making it lower than both Cusco and Ollantaytambo. It’s a tiny town, no more than 300 meters from one end to the other — you can walk from one side to the other in just a few minutes!
There are no taxis or cars within the town itself — everything is done on foot. The only buses available are the ones that shuttle visitors from Aguas Calientes up to the Machu Picchu archaeological site, which sits higher at 2,400 meters (7,874 ft). This short road is the only route used by vehicles in the entire area.
If your main goal is just to visit Machu Picchu, keep in mind that the guided tour inside the citadel lasts a maximum of 4 hours. Due to the high number of visitors and strict regulations, entrance times and durations are limited to preserve the site and manage the flow of tourists.
Once your visit is complete, you’ll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, and from there, catch the train back to Ollantaytambo or Cusco, depending on your travel plan.
Even though it’s small, Aguas Calientes is the gateway to one of the most iconic wonders of the world — a charming little town surrounded by towering green mountains, hot springs, and the mystical energy of the Andes.
