Sun Gate Tour By Horse

Sun Gate Tour by Horse from Ollantaytambo

We are a local team from the community of Cachiccata, the very ground where the Sun Gate trail begins. Nobody knows this route better than the families who have lived alongside it for generations, and that connection shapes every ride we lead — small groups, an unhurried pace, and deep respect for the mountain we call home.

Inti Punku, or «Sun Gate,» was built by the Inca as a ceremonial checkpoint along the network of trails leading toward Machu Picchu. Its stone doorway once framed the sunrise on key dates of the Inca calendar, marking the passage between the sacred valley below and the mountain sanctuary above. Riding to this site today means retracing a path that carried pilgrims, priests, and travelers centuries ago — not just reaching a viewpoint, but stepping into a place still charged with meaning for the communities who live around it

Horseback or on Foot — Your Choice, Our Trail

Reaching Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) is possible either way, but each option offers a different experience:

  • On foot: roughly 6–8 hours of steady climbing to the summit.
  • On horseback: about  4 hours, with more time to pause, breathe in the views, and explore the Inca remains scattered along the path.

Riding lets you cover more ground without exhausting your legs before Machu Picchu — a smart way to prepare for the  Classic Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek if either is still ahead of you.

What You’ll Discover Along the Way

This isn’t just a ride to a viewpoint. The trail itself is an open-air museum:

  • Inca quarry (Cachiccata): the source of much of the stone used to build Ollantaytambo’s fortress.
  • Inca tombs: funerary structures tucked into the hillside, rarely visited by mainstream tour groups.
  • Apu Veronica: sweeping views of this sacred snow-capped peak, one of the most revered mountains in Andean cosmology.
  • Ollantaytambo’s terraces and pyramid: seen from an angle few travelers ever get.
  • Inti Punku (Sun Gate): the ceremonial gateway once used by the Inca to mark the sun’s path — and your final stop.

Our guide explains the purpose behind each site, so the ride becomes a lesson in Inca engineering and belief as much as an adventure.

Pricing

Departure point Price per person Includes
Ollantaytambo $120 USD Horse, local expert guide,  Organig Box Lunch
Cusco (round trip) $150 USD  Transportation Cusco–Ollantaytambo–Cusco, lunch

The Cusco option runs nearly a full day door-to-door, so transport and lunch are built into the price — you won’t need to plan a thing beyond showing up.

Why Base Yourself in Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo sits at a lower altitude than Cusco and is the last town before Machu Picchu on the way in from the Sacred Valley. Staying here for a night or two is a smart move if you’re building up to a longer trek — it gives your body a gentler altitude transition and puts you right at the trailhead for this tour. Booking and Briefing

Your briefing takes place according to where you’re staying — in Cusco or already in Ollantaytambo — and covers everything you need to know before setting out: gear, timing, and what to expect on the ascent. For official background on the archaeological sites you’ll pass, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture’s page on Machu Picchu is a useful reference.

Itinerary

THE SUN GATE TOUR BY HORSE — 1 DAY

Early in the morning, we’ll pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco or Ollantaytambo to begin this unforgettable adventure. From Cusco, our private transport takes us through the Sacred Valley to the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo, then continues to the historic Inca Bridge, where we cross the Urubamba River — a striking entrance into the heart of the valley.

Our well-trained horses will be waiting for us there. After preparing our daypacks for the day ahead, we set off along ancient trails that wind through the mountains, following the same paths the Inca once used to reach the majestic Inti Punku — the Sun Gate, a sacred archaeological gateway to the Inca world.

  • If you’re already staying in Ollantaytambo: we’ll meet you in town, drive to the Inca Bridge, cross the Urubamba River, and begin the ride from there — same route, same horses, same destination.
  • The ascent (4 hours). Reaching the Sun Gate by horse takes roughly 4 hours from the start, climbing gradually with sweeping views of Wakay Willka (Mount Veronica), one of the most sacred peaks in the Andes. Along the way you’ll have plenty of chances to stop and photograph the Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu valleys, watch local farmers at work in their fields, and see the Urubamba River winding through the valley floor far below. We’ll also pass Inca tombs and the Cachiccata quarry — the source of the stone used to build Ollantaytambo, where you can still see finished blocks left along the trail exactly as the Inca quarrymen abandoned them.
  • At the Sun Gate. Once we arrive, you’ll have time to take in the views — the Sacred Valley, snow-capped peaks, and surrounding Inca landscapes — while your guide shares the history and significance of this site as the ceremonial entrance to Wakay Willka. Afterward, we stop for a picnic lunch made with local ingredients, enjoyed with one of the best views on the trail.
  • The descent (3 hours). After lunch, we head back down. The final stretch is too steep for the horses, so we hike on foot for about 35 minutes before reuniting with them for the rest of the ride back — a good chance to stretch your legs, breathe in the mountain air, and take in the flora and atmosphere of the Andes up close.
  • Getting back. We ride back down the same trail to the Inca Bridge, where we started, and reunite with our van for the drive back — about 10 minutes to Ollantaytambo, and roughly 1.5 hours to Cusco, returning you to your hotel whether you started the day in Cusco or Ollantaytambo.
