In this ultimate guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to visit Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu in one epic day. From how to get the right tickets and when to book, to what to expect on the climb, this is your all-in-one resource for planning a smooth and exciting journey with Inca Trail Classic.
At Inca Trail Classic, we believe travel should be personal, safe, and unforgettable. That’s why we not only handle your permits and transport — we also make sure you’re fully prepared for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
1. How to Get Tickets for Huayna Picchu + Machu Picchu
Huayna Picchu has limited daily entries — only around 200 permits per day, divided into two time slots. To hike it, you’ll need a combo ticket that includes both Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu Mountain.
🕒 Entry times:
Group 1: Enter Huayna Picchu between 7:00 – 8:00 a.m.
Group 2: Enter Huayna Picchu between 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Tickets sell out months in advance, so we highly recommend booking early. At Inca Trail Classic, we handle all permit reservations for you, ensuring you won’t miss this unique experience.
☀️ 2. Best Time of Year to Visit
The best months to hike Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu are during the dry season:
April to Novenber, with May to August being the most popular (and dry) months.
🌦️ Rainy season (November–March) still offers magical views, but trails can be slippery and visibility may vary.
We recommend planning your hike for early in the morning to enjoy cooler weather and fewer crowds.
🧗 3. What to Expect on the Huayna Picchu Climb
Huayna Picchu is not a long hike — only about 2 hours round trip — but it’s very steep and not recommended for those with vertigo. You’ll ascend through narrow stone steps, tunnels, and cliffside paths with breathtaking views.
🔥 Fun fact: At the summit, you’ll find the mysterious Temple of the Moon, one of the lesser-known Inca structures.
It’s a challenge, but incredibly rewarding — especially with panoramic views of Machu Picchu from above
4. What to Pack and Wear
Here’s what we recommend for a safe and comfortable climb:
-
Lightweight hiking shoes with good grip
-
Breathable clothes (layers work best)
-
Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses
-
Small backpack with water and snacks
-
Camera or phone (in a waterproof pouch)
-
