Itinerary to Inca Trail.
Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Wayllabamba.
our first day on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a gentle introduction to this legendary trek. The hike is relatively easy, mostly on flat terrain, covering approximately 12 kilometers until you reach the first campsite at Wayllabamba.
Along the way, you’ll pass through small Andean villages, where you can see local houses and witness the traditional lifestyle of the highland communities. Your professional guide will also introduce you to the history of the trail, pointing out sections of the original Inca road and explaining the significance of ancient archaeological remains. This first stage is perfect to acclimatize, enjoy the scenery of the Urubamba Valley, and prepare both body and spirit for the more challenging days ahead. Spending the night at Wayllabamba, surrounded by the tranquility of the Andes, marks the beginning of an unforgettable journey to Machu Picchu.
Day 2: Wayllabamba – Dead Women pass – Pacay mayo Alto
The second day of the Inca Trail is the most demanding, a true test of endurance and spirit. After about 6 hours of steady uphill hiking, you’ll reach the famous Warmiwañusca Pass (Dead Woman’s Pass, 4,215 m), the highest point of the trek.
From there, a 3-hour descent takes you to the Pacaymayo Valley, where you camp under the Andean sky. This day has fewer Inca ruins, but it offers something greater: the challenge of facing yourself and the pride of overcoming the toughest section of the trail.
Day 3 : Pacay Mayo – Phuyo Patamarca – Wiñayhuayna
The third day of the Inca Trail is often considered the most beautiful and rewarding. As the landscape changes, you’ll begin to see the transition into the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with lush vegetation, orchids, and unique birdlife.
This section is filled with history, you’ll explore impressive Inca archaeological sites such as Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, and Wiñay Wayna, each showcasing the incredible engineering and spiritual legacy of the Incas. Along the way, you’ll also pass through Inca tunnels carved into the rock, a true highlight of the trail. With breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and snow-capped mountains, Day 3 is a journey through time, offering both cultural discovery and natural beauty in perfect harmony.
Day 4 : wiñayhuaina – sun gate – machu picchu
On the final day of the Inca Trail, the adventure begins early. At around 4:00 am, hikers wake up and head to the checkpoint at Wiñay Wayna, where all groups wait until the control gate opens at 5:30 am. From there, the last stretch of the trek begins, an easy hike of about 3 hours.
This section is filled with anticipation and excitement as you make your way toward the legendary (Sun Gate (Inti Punku). From this vantage point, the first magical view of Machu Picchu unfolds, an unforgettable reward after days of effort.
The trail on this day is similar in difficulty to Day 1: mostly gentle and not demanding, but full of energy and emotion. Finally, you descend into the Lost City of the Incas, where history, mystery, and achievement combine in a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
